Geospatial Developer
Raised in Saskatchewan, Darren grew up a farm boy, fond of sports, music, and nature. He earned a B.Sc. in Biology at Simon Fraser University, before completing an M.Sc. in Wildlife at Louisiana State University. He also has an Advanced Diploma in GIS, from BCIT.
After university, Darren worked in GIS at a non-profit, as an environmental consultant, and in field biology. He then joined Sparkgeo—drawn to the interesting projects we’ve worked on.
In his time at Sparkgeo, Darren’s lent his expertise to varied projects. He enjoys remote sensing problem solving and development. He’s most proud of the imagery ship finder he worked on—and how it boosted the client portfolio of available algorithms/capability.
Darren works remotely, and joins us on site, from time to time. He likes that work fits his lifestyle. He also appreciates the opportunities for continuous learning Sparkgeo supports. He’s excited about distributed computing, as well as the promise of machine learning, deep learning, and AI.
He’s visited the Louisiana bayous, Wyoming deserts, and Norwegian fjords. He holds a special fondness for Hawaii (the Big Island), for its beautiful scenery, snorkelling, hiking, and laid-back vibe.
In his spare time, he enjoys cross-country skiing, crosswords, gardening, raising chickens. He also plays a pretty mean game of ping pong.
