Software Developer
Although Melissa started her professional life in the spatial industry, she moved into front-end web development and is enthusiastic about code craftsmanship.
She has significant experience building maintainable web applications that scale, and has worked in a variety of settings including for Canadian Credit Unions, public health researchers, multiple levels of government, non-profits, as a successful advocacy group co-founder, and as a freelancer. In late 2019, she joined Sparkgeo to combine her love of web development and solving spatial problems.
Melissa credits Will for being a leader who encourages everyone to ask difficult questions and to learn through experimentation. She says this not only makes building products more constructive and increases the probability of success, but it also makes working at Sparkgeo rewarding and enjoyable.
Melissa and her family call the East Kootenays home. After spending many years in rainy Vancouver, Melissa is in love with the sunny winters (even -40), no commute, deer who sleep on her lawn, trails into the woods right at her doorstep, and the quietness of small town life.
Other than her own back yard in the Kootenays, Melissa’s favourite places include Central America, New Orleans, and the Netherlands. She especially enjoys the Netherlands because of their well designed people-centric cities.
