Chloe Papalazarou

Chloe studied Biological and Medical Physics at the University of Guelph. During co-op terms, her interest in remote sensing and data science was piqued. This influenced her fourth-year thesis, which explored ways to improve remote sensing techniques. She went on to pursue a master’s in Geography (with a focus on Climate Science) at Simon Fraser University. In this time she studied the effectiveness of different levels and rates of CO2 removal on the earth system. Another aspect of her research explored the land carbon cycle and how different continental regions react to amounts and rates of removal (in carbon cycle fluxes, changes in plant types, and temperature). As a child, Chloe was highly social. She enjoyed camping and road trips with her family. Her love of animals and the outdoors sparked her curiosity. She collected bugs and snails. She also developed an interest in drawing and a passion for the arts. Sparkgeo was attractive to Chloe for several reasons. The first related to the diverse problems tackled by the team. This appealed to her curious nature, and desire to solve multi-disciplinary problems (spanning technology, science, and design). She also appreciated the company’s focus on professional and personal development. Research and analysis are Chloe’s happy place. She loves sifting through data and finding sometimes not immediately apparent results—that suggest a bigger story. She’s currently working on some RADAR research and is keen to dig deeper into the world of remote sensing. Despite working remotely, Chloe already feels at home at Sparkgeo. She appreciates the warm (virtual) welcome she received from the team and has since become a part of the family. To date, this experience has involved games of Catan… and many bread photos. Outside of her professional pursuits, Chloe likes to hike, climb, ski, camp, cycle, and paddle. She bakes bread, brews kombucha, and is learning to ferment vinegar. Through her travels, she visited Rome, Amsterdam, Prague, and Berlin, which top her list of favorite cities. She also stayed in cabins in Scotland’s mountains, which she remembers as an unreal experience. She looks forward to catching up with friends at a restaurant/bar once again. Chloe once went on a 90km hike with friends… using only Google Maps to guide them.
