Raised in Saskatchewan, Darren grew up a farm boy, fond of sports, music, and nature. He earned a B.Sc. in Biology, before completing an M.Sc. in Wildlife, and holds an Advanced Diploma in GIS. After university, Darren worked in GIS at a non-profit, as an environmental consultant, and in field biology.
Joining Sparkgeo in May 2017, he was drawn to the interesting projects we’ve worked on. Working from Prince George, he enjoys remote sensing problem solving and development. Sparkgeo fits his lifestyle, and supports opportunities for continuous learning. He’s excited about distributed computing, as well as the promise of machine learning, deep learning, and AI.
Darren has visited the Louisiana bayous, Wyoming deserts, and Norwegian fjords. He holds a special fondness for Hawaii (the Big Island), for its beautiful scenery, snorkeling, hiking, and laid-back vibe. In his spare time, he enjoys cross-country skiing, crosswords, gardening, and raising chickens. He also plays a pretty mean game of ping pong.
